The Distance Learning (DL) programs accept students in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.
Admission requirements for study in the professional MPH and MSPH include:
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in public health, environmental or occupational health and safety, disaster management or related field.
- Academic achievement – typically a GPA above 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Consideration will be given to mid-career student who have shown professional achievement.
- Industrial Hygiene MSPH only: Baccalaureate degree with 120 semester hours that include 60 or more credits in math, engineering, science and technology with at least 15 of those at an upper (junior, senior or graduate) level
- Industrial Hygiene MSPH only: GRE scores in the upper percentiles for Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Analytical Writing components.
- Non-English speakers: Demonstration of proficiency in English to be able to study and communicate in English. TOEFL, IELTS, or other recognized test may be used. In general scores of 89 or higher on TOEFL are desired. Language testing will be waived if student has received an undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S. institution.
Other information used in admission decisions includes:
- The written Statement of Purpose and Objectives, which should demonstrate how the applicant's public health career goals and interests align with their selected degree program.
- Recommendations from three instructors or employers should indicate characteristics for success in public health graduate study.
All graduate public health degree applications are submitted through a public health centralized application portal called SOPHAS.
Degree Programs
Go to SOPHAS, fill out the application.
You will need to submit:
- Official transcripts from all universities you have attended, including any degree(s) conferred.
- Statement of Purpose/Career statement indicating your career goals and professional experience.
- Three letters of recommendation indicating characteristics for success in public health graduate study.
- Resume highlighting professional experience.
- Industrial Hygiene MSPH only: Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores

Graduate Certificate programs are 15 credits of master’s course work that provide focused study in our degree programs areas.
Admission requirements:
- A baccalaureate degree with a GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. The industrial hygiene graduate certificate requires that the bachelor’s degree include a minimum of 60 semester hours of math, engineering, science and technology.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in public health, environmental or occupational health and safety, disaster management or related field.
- Non-English speakers: Demonstration of proficiency in English to be able to study and communicate in English. TOEFL, IELTS, or other recognized test may be used. In general scores of 89 or higher on TOEFL are desired.

Students interested in the Graduate Certificate programs can apply and submit all materials using the online application form, as follows.

Since the Graduate Certificates are non-degree programs, they are not eligible for federal financial aid.
To try out the distance learning program or if you only need one course.
Take a course as a Non-Degree Special Student (NDSS).
- Must have a bachelor’s degree to take courses for graduate credit.
- May take no more than 12 credits total as NDSS
- May not receive a certificate or a degree without being accepted into the respective program.

Tulane SPHTM offers its students a top tier graduate education, provides technical and help desk support, and teaching by leading professionals in environmental and occupational health and safety and disaster management at a reasonable tuition.
Degree seeking students enrolled in the Distance Learning program are eligible for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans as long as they are enrolled in at least 5 credit hours and/or a Practicum per semester. Students in this program are eligible for funds to pay for their tuition, fees and books. If you have any questions, please contact your assigned financial aid counselor. Certificate programs are considered non-degree programs and are not eligible for financial aid.
