The Graduate Certificate Occupational Health and Safety Management (OHSM) provides management skills to occupational health, environmental health, industrial hygiene professionals have the technical skills and seek to further their careers through management leadership. The graduate certificate provides graduate study in the fundamentals of project management, financial management and applies systems thinking to manage health and safety programs.
Backgrounds of professionals in the Occupational Health and Safety Management: Industrial hygienists, safety engineers, environmental health & safety specialists, occupational health physicians and nurses.
At the completion of the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management, the student will be able to:
- Apply systems thinking methods to health and safety management.
- Demonstrate methods of systematically integrating health and safety programs into organizational management.
- Apply business principles of budgeting and finance to health and safety programs.
The Distance Learning Programs follow the Tulane SPHTM admission requirements. In addition, the department requests the following from applicants:
- Baccalaureate degree, preferably in a STEM area, public health, nursing with Grade Point Average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. Or, degree in medicine or other health care professional degree.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in industrial hygiene or closely related field.

The Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management requires 16 credits includes:
- GEHS 6540 Occupational Health (3)*
- GEHS 6700 Principles of Safety (2)* OR GEHS 6720 Principles of Industrial Hygiene (3)*
- GEHS 7230 Fundamentals of Project Management for ES&H (3)
- GEHS 7240 Applying Systems Thinking to EH&S (3)
- GEHS 7260 Financial Aspects of EH&S (3)
- GEHS 7310 Occupational Laws and Compliance (2)
* Students who demonstrate knowledge in these areas may substitute this course with an elective course.
Apply Graduate Certificate credits toward the MPH in Occupational Health and Safety Management
Course credits received in the graduate certificate may be applied to the MPH in OHSM. Students proceeding into the MPH degree complete a total of 42 credits that include the remainder of the required OHSM courses and the SPHTM core. Only the MPH degree in OHSM is awarded. Student must have a GPA of 3.0 in coursework and meet the MPH degree admission requirements to transfer to the degree program. Contact the DL manager prior to completion of the certificate for information.
Combined Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management with a MPH degree in another area
Students in another MPH degree program seeking to add a graduate certificate in may use the elective credits available in a degree program, but not required courses, for the graduate certificate. Required courses cannot be double counted toward both the MPH and a graduate certificate. If there is an overlap in required courses, the student, in consultation with their advisor, selects another OHSM courses to meet the 15 credits. The combined MPH and graduate certificate may take 5 to 6 additional credits beyond the total for the degree alone. The combined MSPH in industrial hygiene and graduate certificate will take an additional 14 credits.
